Roy Carruthers, a descendant of craftsmen, was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa in 1938. As an adolescent, he took formal art school training there but found its educational constraints out of harmony with the flights of his imagination. After leaving South Africa, Carruthers lived in major cities throughout the world and was exposed to vastly different cultures. He rapidly became immersed in the new opportunities he was being afforded. After exploring a career in advertising, Carruthers gave up all other pursuits in order to concentrate solely on his art. In 1968, he emigrated to the United States and now lives in Florida with his wife, Valerie. His work is featured in the collections of the Ulrich Museum, the Weatherspoon Art Gallery, the University of Wyoming Art Museum, and in many major private collections throughout the world. |
